What We Left Behind (by Luisa A. Jones)

I love reading historical fiction books and especially if they are set during the WWII timeframe. My heart breaks when I read about the children who were sent to live in the country and other locations to be safe from the bombings in London during WWII. I have not, however, read about being sent to Wales, so this was a new aspect for me. This particular book focuses more on the five children who end up being housed with sisters Charlotte and Dodie. Getting to know the children was entertaining, especially Peter. His attitude and smart mouth had me laughing at times though I know it had to have been challenging to the sisters to care for him especially. I fell in love with Dodie (or Aunt Dodie as the children called her) and her caring nature, willingness to stand for what is right and to support those in whom she believes. And their male teacher from America, Mr. Winter, was a wonderful example of what a teacher should be. He encouraged, corrected, challenged, and developed creative ways to teach and mentor the children. What a better world we would live in and a fantastic future for our children if there were more teachers like Patrick Winter.
