I enjoy reading historical fiction books and especially those that take place during WWII. As I have said recently, I have read so many books set during that time period that it is hard to find one that presents a unique approach to the war. Imogen Matthews has definitely done that with this book. I have read about tattooists, musicians, and seamstresses who worked in the concentration camps. But the focus on a photographer who was tasked with photographing the inmates as they were delivered to the camp, Westerbork, and to fulfill the request to provide pictures that were part of the Nazi propaganda. The characters were richly developed and spending time with them in both periods of time was interesting. The fact that this was based on a real person and events tore at my heart. The anxiety that Robert and his family endured was heart wrenching. Once again, the willingness of people to take risks to help stop the atrocities of Hitler’s reign of terror or to bring to light the truth of what really happened behind the walls of the concentration camps brought me to tears while cheering them on. This is a book you need to put on your to-be-read list!
