The Radio Hour (by Victoria Purman)

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio version of this book. The narrator does a great job of bringing the story to life. And I love the Australian accent! The characters are well developed and I fell in love with Martha, April, May and June as well as other side characters. It was interesting to learn about the age of radio and the stories that were written and performed on air. The sexist attitude among the men who were in positions of power was appalling. And the fact that a woman would be fired if she got married shocked me. She could only work if she was single! But I guess that was the way things were at that time in history. (Though the author does allow some grace in that she does not depict every man as a male chauvinist! There are some men with redeeming qualities.)

I strongly encourage you to put this one on your to-be-read list if you appreciate historical fiction books with strong female characters. Martha is one amazing woman and I loved getting to know her and watch her find confidence in herself and her abilities.

As an aside, I remember going to my grandmother’s house and listening to stories on the radio in her living room. I was born in 1960, so there were still some radio shows being aired.
