The Map Maker's Promise (by Catherine Law)

This was an interesting historical fiction dual timeline book. While it is written during the WWII time period, it was a little different focus than what I have typically read. Both story lines … Clare’s set between 1940 and 1948 and Mirren’s set in 1985 have similarities. The map making details was very interesting and I never considered how the person who created the maps could feel responsible for killing people because of the pilots were able to accomplish while using the maps to bomb targets. This is an emotional read as you struggle with Clare as she has to make decisions about what is best for her child; as you experience Clare’s sister’s emotions as she is provided an opportunity to be a mother to her niece … one of the things she has wanted most in life; and Mirren’s struggles in understanding why her mother didn’t want her. The fact that no one shared the background story was sad. This is not a light read but is very informative and will help you explore all of the emotional ramifications for decisions we make in difficult moments.
