The Boys in the Light (by Nina Willner)

This was a very emotional read. I have read a lot of historical fiction books that take place during WWII. I continue to be in awe of what so many individuals experienced during Hitler’s reign of terror. And while a portion of this book rehashes Hitler’s rise to power and how so many people were hypnotized into believing his depraved ideology, the time spent with the members of Company D and two young men, Eddie (the author’s father) and his best friend, Mike, is heart wrenching and inspiring. The horrendous treatment Eddie and Mike, as well as so many others endured is unspeakable. The story will pull you in as you survive the evils of the Nazis and as your journey along with the boys of Company D. Their growth and the camaraderie they develop will warm your heart. And as you experience the ah-ha moment when they discover emaciated and near-death escapees Eddie and Mike, and come to realize why they had fought so hard to win the war. It stared them straight in the eyes and pierced their hearts. Having a glimpse into the lives of the characters decades after the war was over was enlightening and touching. The bond between these dedicated men was strong and brought me to tears.
