I love historical fiction books and especially those that take place during WWII. Add in a dual timeline, and I am hooked and ready to get lost in the story. This book has a different focus than those typically written about WWII. The characters are well developed; the setting of St. Simons Island, Georgia, and the relationships that develop will draw you into the story. The three male characters, Will, Dov, and Hans are very different personalities and come from completely different lifestyles. Yet one woman, Joannie, will connect them. As you meet Hadley and Kitzie in the present day part of the novel, you will observe the background story of the main characters’ lives and secrets revealed. This moving story will have you emotionally invested as you experience anger over the fact women were not allowed to fly for the military and how Black men were mistreated though they were willing to risk their lives for the United States at that point in time. The author has done an amazing job of melding the two timelines together so that the story flows smoothly and into a satisfying end. An enjoyable book for book clubs to read with so many aspects to be discussed. Put this one at the top of your to-be-read list. I will be searching for other books by this author!
